Elara is the darkest moon of Jupiter. It reflects less than five percent of the light that reaches it, which is why almost nobody has ever looked at it. It has been going around anyway, for longer than there has been anyone to notice.
The moon
Found by accident, on a photographic plate.
On 6 January 1905, Charles Dillon Perrine was photographing Jupiter through the Crossley reflector at Lick Observatory. He had found a moon the day before — a bigger one, the one that got the attention. Elara turned up on the plate the next night.
It sits 11.7 million kilometres out, taking two hundred and fifty-nine days to come back around. It is dark rock, probably a broken piece of a captured asteroid. It does not glow, it has no rings, and no spacecraft has ever been sent to see it.
Everyone looks at the bright ones. Elara kept its orbit either way.
